English and Modern Languages

  • Reading, writing, speaking, listening, linguistics and visual literacy. In Olivet’s Department of English and Modern Languages, you will explore all aspects of language arts!

  • Our mission is to teach students to communicate effectively, to recognize and appreciate the interplay between language and culture, to interact critically with a wide range of texts, and to apply these skills in their lives of service to God and humanity.

Our department is small enough for faculty to know our students on a first name basis. Professors often invite students into their homes. They help to broaden the student experience through a variety of cultural and literary events, in the community, in Chicago, and abroad.

    Putting knowledge to work

In addition to the solid education our students receive in the classroom, there are many opportunities outside the classroom. Our students can:

    • Participate in study abroad opportunities
    • Take cultural visits to Chicago
    • Join the English honor society (Sigma Tau Delta society, Tau Theta chapter) or Spanish honor society (Sigma Delta Pi society, Chi Omega chapter.)
    • Help create the Tygr magazine, a literary and art magazine produced by students for students.

Alumni careers include: teachers, librarians, missionaries, ministers, teachers of English or Spanish in other countries, lawyers, paralegals, editors, journalists, freelance writers, interpreters, workers in state departments and for various nonprofit organizations, communications directors and college professors.
