Music Ministry

  • Available as a major (B.M.)
Traditional. Contemporary. Gospel. Regardless of the style, Olivet’s Music Ministry program is preparing future worship leaders and musicians for ministry in the local and global Church.

  • For students called into full-time music ministry, the School of Music offers a program that blends comprehensive and thorough technical training with the deeply spiritual emphasis one would expect from a premier Christian university.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have experience playing the organ?

No, you do not have to have previous experience on the organ.  However, organ lessons are offered for those who are interested.  With Olivet's brand new Ruffatti pipe organ located in Centennial Chapel, ONU organ students have a state-of-the art instrument on which to perform.

I don’t play the piano, is that a problem?

Yes and no.  All music majors and minors are required to pass piano proficiency.  Students with previous piano experience have a definite advantage in preparing for this step.  However, several beginning and intermediate piano classes are available to help students who have little or no piano background prepare for the piano proficiency exam.

Do I have to do a solo recital?

Yes.  All music majors are required to do a senior recital.  Church music majors are required to present a thirty minute recital on their applied instrument either first or second semester of their senior year.

Music students are also required to perform a single piece on one of the several student recitals during the semester.  Don’t worry! Your applied teacher will help you select an appropriate piece when the time comes.
