Olivet Nazarene University Tiger men’s cross country team captured the title at the Midwest Classic to kick off the 2017 season. Paced by Wesley Meyer, a sophomore geology major; Tyler Banks, a freshman biology major; and Matt Meehan, a senior business administration major, the Tigers easily captured the team title with seven runners finishing in the top 11.
The Tigers hosted the 8K race at Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais. Saint Xavier University (Illinois) finished second with Greenville College (Illinois) in third. The race featured five full teams and 68 total runners.
Wesley Meyer posted the fastest time, crossing the finish line in 26:22.26 to finish third overall. Tyler Banks and Matt Meehan battled it out for fourth and fifth places, finishing at 26:55.04 and 26:55.42 respectively.
Rounding out the top five for Olivet were Zachary Bishop, a sophomore engineering major, and Tyler Gabriele, a senior engineering major, who finished in seventh and eighth places respectively. Zachary posted a time of 26:59.61, while Tyler finished at 27:06.97.
Zachary Emptage, a sophomore chemistry major, also posted a top-10 finish, coming in ninth with a time of 27:13.38.
Olivet’s team will return to action on Friday, Sept. 22, at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana College (Illinois) at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois. The men’s race is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
