Eight weeks in 2017 flew by for Olivet Nazarene University junior Goldene Brown. ABC7 Chicago. CNN. Fox 32 Chicago. Magazine. Newsletter. Social media. Summer Brain Games. Her internship at one of the world’s largest science museums in the third largest U.S. city challenged her and changed her career ambitions.
Majoring in multimedia journalism, Goldene experienced many facets of her future career while being part of a dynamic professional team.
During this internship, her supervisor was keenly aware of Goldene’s skills, talents and interests. Goldene completed a variety of assignments with the Museum’s marketing and human resources teams. Her career goal is to be a news anchor, and she even did some work in front of the camera for social media posts on Instagram and Facebook.
She wrote several news releases and sent out media alerts to area media. On site at Fox 32 Chicago, she did some behind-the-scenes work to help produce Museum segments for airing. When a staff member was on leave, Goldene took over the production of “Dateline,” the intranet communication for Museum staff.
During her high school years, Goldene volunteered in a variety of areas at the Museum. Her brother, Cornelius — an Olivet freshman majoring in mathematics — volunteered for four years with the Science Achievers group to help guests learn about science. At a fundraising dinner recently, the Museum honored the entire Brown family for their ongoing support and involvement.
“I learned a lot about flexibility during this internship,” Goldene says. “I learned how to work well with a lot of different people and how to be productive.”
