In light of the disruptive global events of last year, Olivet Nazarene University’s theatre department is using artistic expression to creatively remind us that, as senior student-director McKayla Zorn says, “Tragedy does not define who we are, how we respond to it does.” The spring play, New York, written by David Rimmer follows the attacks of 9/11 on New York City, illustrating how hope and support is found within community.
McKayla explains, “This message of this show is exactly what we need right now —unity and community.” She continues, “I think it’s good to be reminded of a time when all that mattered was that we were a united nation. I want to be part of the force that unites us again.”
In New York, the lives of 15 individuals are portrayed in the “doctor’s” office. Every one of the clients, all from different walks of life, has been affected by the events of 9/11 and is seeking answers, advice and comfort.
Zorn explains, “This play is unique because it is not about the tragedy itself, but rather about a community that pulls itself back together despite the challenges that they are facing.”
Streaming for the show will premiere on March 5, at 7:00 p.m., and on-demand streaming will be available from March 5-19. Tickets for the virtual performance are $7.50 and are available at olivet.edu/tickets. This show is recommended for ages 13 and older.
