On April 7, 2021, Olivet Nazarene University recognized senior Noah Campbell-White as Student Employee of the Year and Anne Whalen as Student Employment Supervisor of the Year for 2021. The Office of Human Resources coordinated surprise celebrations for both Noah and Anne and the departments in which they work.
Nominations for these awards came from students, staff and faculty members in recognition of the contributions and positive impacts student employees and supervisors have on their respective department or office.
Noah Campbell-White is a senior music performance – vocal major from Nampa, Idaho. He is a student employee for the School of Music.
Noah’s supervisor, Lynne Utter, said in the nomination: “Noah will always ask what he can help with. He intuitively knows what is expected and will be proactive in doing those tasks. I am able to confidently leave Noah in charge of a project and know that it will be finished correctly and promptly. He is one that I can ask to lead a group in a project and is an effective leader.”
Lynne reiterated Noah’s standout qualities, “I don’t believe there is anyone that doesn’t like him. Noah is an instant friend and pays attention to people when they speak with him. He stays calm in challenging times and is a wonderful friend and leader.”
Anne (Wadsworth) Whalen ’03 serves as the Associate Director of Church Relations. She has worked for Olivet for three years – two of which were served in her current position.
Anne was nominated by three of her student workers, Cammi Bittinger, Jesse Johnson and Timmy Miller. In her nomination letter, Cammi said, “Anne is truly the mouthpiece of our office. Her communication skills are exceptional. As a student worker, I have learned how to better communicate and do so in a professional manner. Although Anne is a natural public speaker and keeps our students informed and up to date, most of our communication happens over online platforms. As a former teacher, she can control a room of 50 college students like a champion. As a supervisor, she encourages and offers her student workers the ability to lead from their position. Because of this, those who work for her also grow as public speakers and communicators.”
“She is so genuinely one of the most enthusiastically hardworking people that are out there,” Cammi continued. “She displays such an earnest love for doing her work and doing it well that it is contagious. Her organization skills say two things about her: that she is extremely proficient in what she does, and she loves her work profusely. The way she manages herself both inside and outside of the office is inspiring to everyone who has the privilege to work under her.”
Based on Cammi’s recommendation letter, Anne was also chosen as the runner up for the State of Illinois Student Employee Supervisor of the Year award. She will receive a certificate and a check in recognition of her accomplishments.
Student employees add immense value to Olivet’s campus every year. During the 2020-21 academic year, Olivet employed 1,017 students who collectively earned $1.89 million.
“Not only do Olivet students excel in the classroom, but they show their talents and abilities through their work across campus,” says director of human resources, Tom Asher ’08/’17 MBA. “We are grateful for the efforts and important contribution of each student worker. They have a direct impact on the success of the University.”
