In the autumn 2021 issue of Olivet The Magazine, “The Parent Guide,” the editorial team curated a selection of content specifically geared toward parents and families of prospective college students.
Based on Olivet’s core tenet that higher education should serve a higher purpose, the goal of this special issue is to provide context for why “We Believe. You Belong Here.” through faculty contributions, financial aid guides, a college admission checklist and an overview of what life at Olivet can look like for an incoming freshman or transfer student.
In his letter “From the President,” Dr. Gregg Chenoweth ’90 provided insight and advice for how family members can help guide their student to uncovering a career calling.
“Your student’s calling is God’s dream—not a dream in terms of images or sensations during sleep but an anticipation of possibilities for His great cause,” he wrote. “This calling eventually becomes a project that God entrusts to your student, who will have the sense that it is a timely, strategic, necessary role in His plans and will probably stamp the entire community.”
The Parent Guide features four contributed articles from Dr. David Van Heemst, Prof. Ashley Sarver, Dr. Cynthia Taylor and Dr. Les Parrott, who all speak to the value of Christian higher education from a variety of perspectives. Additionally, the magazine interview Dean of the College of Professional Studies, Dr. Amber Residori about how students can find their calling through “The Process of Becoming.”
“Let’s be honest: Choosing a career is important, and not many of us were ready to make that decision at 17 or 18 years old,” Dr. Residori reflected. “However, each of us are blessed with unique gifts and talents, and there are careers that match our specific strengths.”
The 65-page issue also highlights success stories of transfer students, a “First Person” perspective from McGraw School of Business professor Doug Nielsen, and news stories covering the academic accomplishments of students, faculty and alumni including a recap of how Olivet safely started the on-campus school year.
