Introducing the 2021 Olivet Christmas Ornament. Manufactured by the creators of the Official White House Christmas Ornament, this year’s piece features Milby Clock Tower.
The Thomas H. Milby Memorial Clock Tower was provided by the J. Harlan Milby Family and is the only structure on campus named for a student. On Monday, October 25, 1956, it was discovered that Tom had leukemia with a life expectancy of less than two weeks. Four days later, he quietly went to be with his Lord. The Milby Tower was built on the spot where the Milbys were informed of their son’s disease.
As a memorial to his son, Mr. J. Harlan Milby gave the college five years of service without salary as a fundraiser. He collected more than three million dollars, from which six buildings were erected: Nesbitt Hall, Hills Hall, Chalfant Auditorium, Reed Hall of Science, Strickler Planetarium, and Ludwig Center.
The clock tower was dedicated on September 29, 1972, and has since been restored in 1996 and 2011. The most recent renovation added a charming cloud white and acadia green belfry. There is a plaque at the base of the Milby Clock Tower that reads, “Tom walked these paths on his way to heaven.” Thousands of students pass this tower daily between classes; may it be a constant reminder of our journey to eternity.
