Classes for students at Olivet Nazarene University began on January 11, and every weekend since has been filled with opportunities for students to connect on and off campus. Spring semester has been filled with student-driven experiences and more have been planned for the coming weeks.

ONU Athletic History Made
The first men’s varsity volleyball game took place at the beginning of this semester. Although the team began tournaments and various activities the previous academic year, this spring, the team has an official season. With 22 participants, the roster is set and the inaugural season is underway.

“This has been a really crazy season,” said junior Dalen Mathews. “I have never seen a team come together so quickly and have such a strong on and off the court connection. It’s humbling and exciting to know that we will go down in history as the ones who started it all. We play as a family and work hard behind the scenes to achieve greatness.”

Intramural Sports
The cold weather has not stopped the fun at Olivet. Intramural sports are back in session and are being offered to students for free this semester. Currently, basketball, soccer, volleyball and Spikeball are being played.

In a recent poll, Olivet students voted that 6×6 volleyball is their favorite intramural sport. The games are played in the fieldhouse of the Perry Student Life and Recreation Center. With more than 80% of the student body participating, this season of competitive intramurals is sure to be an exciting highlight for this semester.

Fun in the Community
Although some annual large school events were postponed to later in the semester, weekends have been full of fun for Olivet students. The first weekend students were invited to see any film for free at local movie theaters. Another weekend included ice skating at Ice Valley Centre Kankakee Valley Park District Ice Arena.

Additionally, the Associated Student Council set up activities at the fieldhouse for an indoor recess each weekend. These events allowed students to engage in community and create new memories.

Sophomore Kelsey Robertson took advantage of both local activities. “My favorite memory was seeing two free movies with some great friends,” she said. “I would say that the funniest moment was trying to do the splits while ice skating the next weekend.”

Walking Through the Darkness
Spiritual life and weekly chapel services are still at the forefront of the Olivet experience. As the campus comes together twice a week, the chapel theme for this semester is to learn how to walk through the darkness.

With guest speakers and student-led worship, the campus community benefits from various perspectives about leaning on Christ’s word in the midst of trying times.
