In the autumn 2022 issue of Olivet The Magazine, “The Celebration Issue,” the editorial team curated a selection of content celebrating the 10-year history of the University’s publication.
Olivet Nazarene University has published the current format of Olivet The Magazine since December 2012. Previously, the University published a quarterly newsletter magazine that focused on Olivet from an insider perspective. Ten years ago, the publication was rebranded and revamped to inspire and encourage readers regardless of whether they previously had an affinity for the University.
This issue of the magazine opens with an insightful article about The Why of Olivet written by University President Gregg Chenoweth, Ph.D.
“People ask about my why for Olivet,” Dr. Chenoweth reflects. “Why do I get up early every Monday morning with excitement? Why work evening or weekends? Why all the travel, the prayer, the striving? Three answers: First, when students receive spiritual help, it fuels my tank. … Second, I find a fifth gear when alumni really deliver, professionally and missionally, for the communities they occupy. … Third, this job requires that I always work on a distant future, trying to birth things unseen. That’s hard. But it’s worth it when you cut the ribbon on a big and difficult project that will bless thousands of people for decades to come.”
The Celebration Issue features four full-text reprints from stellar guest contributors, Dr. Karen Ball, Dr. Kent Olney, Dr. Les Parrott and Dr. John C. Bowling, as well as snippets from other faculty, staff and alumni who wrote for the magazine over its history. All former issues can be accessed through Olivet.edu/Olivet-magazine.
In an interview with the new vice president for student development, readers can get to know Jason Stephens as he talks about his passion for helping students thrive during their college experience and shares his favorite places to hangout on campus.
“So much of what happens at Olivet has a lot of thought, meaning and intentionality behind it, says Jason. “From assigned seats in chapel to planned events like Ollies Follies to the curriculum students engage with inside and outside of the classroom. These experiences are intentionally created to help transform students’ lives into a posture of service, worship and pursuit of God’s calling.”
The 64-page issue also highlights a First Person perspective of the Olivet experience from recent alumnus Stella Barrera; the excellent Olivet experiences of Raving Fans, Don and Yvonne Wilson and their four kids who are current Olivet students; snapshots from summer internships; and news stories and headlines that cover the academic and professional accomplishments of students, faculty and alumni.
