Spanish education students will gain mastery of the language, understanding of various cultures and histories, as well as pedagogical knowledge. Students take courses within both the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences. All graduates will be prepared to teach Spanish in grades K-12.

The department works in cooperation with the School of Education to meet the requirements for teaching certification in the State of Illinois. In addition to field experiences within the classroom, students will complete a professional semester while student teaching. Students must take a language proficiency exam recognized by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. This is a national exam that certifies student proficiency for teaching.

Outside the Classroom

Spanish students have many opportunities to volunteer, participate and learn through avenues such as:

  • El Cafecito (Spanish speaking and coffee)
  • Hispanic ministry
  • Noche de Alabanza (Spanish worship night)
  • Native Spanish-speaking tutors
  • Interpretation at local Parent-Teacher conferences
  • Shalom Project mission trips
