At Olivet, students can pursue their interests in hospitality, dietetics and nutrition, interior and architectural design and so much more. As they prepare for Christ-centered service to individuals, families and communities, they enjoy the integrative study offered in the area of family and consumer sciences.

Accreditations and Affiliations

Family and Consumer Sciences students are preparing to enter a competitive professional environment. Olivet Nazarene University’s Dietetic program is reviewed and monitored by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), for assurance of quality dietetics education; the Interior Design program is affiliated with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and the American Society of Interior Designers.

Internship Opportunities

During their senior year, FACS students are required to complete an internship. Olivet students have worked for a variety of local and national companies, including: Disney World, Hilton Garden Inn, Spot Light Meeting, Holly Hunt, Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn, Riverside Medical Center, Silver Cross Hospital, Heartland Cabinetry and More, Casa Bella Design Group, Devon Grace Interiors, Philbin Construction, Nordstrom, Sodexo Food Service, and many more. Internships are introductory-level positions, often paid, and have resulted in full-time job offers.

Dr. Anne Figus

When discussing her students, Dr. Anne Figus has no trouble bragging about their accomplishments and how Olivet has contributed to their success. In addition to being Department Chair, Dr. Figus is a Professor of Interior and Architectural Design and teaches courses related to residential and commercial design, architectural drafting, and design visualization.

Life Outside the Classroom

A lot happens outside the classroom for all students who choose a major in the area of family and consumer sciences. Experiential learning, service projects and team activities, as well as the opportunities to participate in numerous community projects, such as a service project at the Ronald McDonald House, Greater Chicago Food Depository, Kankakee Empowerment for a Brighter Future, researched-based missions trips within the U.S. and abroad and the remodeling of a local Salvation Army thrift store.
