“This is the next step, and it’s so cool and wonderful,” began Dr. Amber Residori, Dean of the College of Professional Studies, as she addressed the new students and their parents at Olivet Nazarene University’s orientation. With her dual perspective as both an administrator and a parent of two Olivet students, Residori offered a unique and heartfelt welcome, speaking from experience as a professor, administrator, and a mom.
Dr. Residori acknowledged the emotional journey parents have undertaken, recalling the first time they left their children at daycare or school. “This is the bookend to that first drop-off,” she said, emphasizing the growth and experiences their children have gained over the years. She encouraged parents to cherish the memories and feel proud of their children’s accomplishments as they embark on this new chapter. “Your job now is to cheer encouragement from the sidelines as they literally grow into adults in the next few years. Trust them. They can do this. Trust us. We’ve got them.”
For the students, Residori likened the college experience to a marathon with four distinct legs: learning community, building relationships, gaining competency, and making an impact. She assured them that while the journey might seem daunting, it is also filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and lifelong friendships. “You are about to embark on one of the coolest seasons of your life,” she declared, highlighting the excitement and challenges ahead.
Residori emphasized the importance of engaging with the community and building relationships. She encouraged students to be brave and seize the opportunities to join activities and make new friends. “Be brave now, and make the most of your time with us,” she urged, reassuring them that everyone is still finding their place and building connections.
In discussing the academic journey, Residori stressed the importance of gaining competency through perseverance and effort. “College is unlike any previous high school,” she noted, highlighting the expectation for students to own their education and strive for excellence. She reminded them that their professors are dedicated to their success and eager to help them achieve their highest potential.
As the event concluded, Residori painted a hopeful picture of the future, urging parents to trust in their children’s abilities and the support system at Olivet. “Trust them. They can do this. Trust us. We’ve got them,” she affirmed, inviting both students and parents to embrace the journey ahead with confidence and enthusiasm.
