Andrew Hoag

Assistant Professor


Dr. Hoag has taught in Olivet’s English Department since fall 2020.  He teaches college composition, creative writing, business communication, and writing theory.

Dr. Hoag earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2014, where his program covered Latino/a studies, 19th and 20th century American and British literature, linguistics, and rhetoric and writing studies.  His dissertation conducted a comparative linguistic analysis of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges’s Spanish language translations of 19th and 20th century American writers, including Edgar Allan Poe, Langston Hughes, William Faulkner, and Walt Whitman.  His areas of interest include literature from the Western hemisphere, the application of linguistics theory to various kinds of writing and literary studies, the writing theory of Mina Shaughnessy and Andrea Lunsford, and the practical application of writing skills to different aspects of life and society.

Dr. Hoag and his wife Brenda have three children: Oliver (5), Everett (4), and Vivienne (6 months).  Their first child is their Maltese dog, Maddie, who has traveled with them from California to Texas, back to California, and now to Illinois.  The Hoag family enjoys spending time outside, going on road trip adventures, playing board games, and watching Disney movies and “The Office.”
