Biological Sciences

As undergraduates, Olivet science majors get to explore mysteries of the human body that are typically reserved for study in graduate school and beyond. Students benefit from hands-on learning in excellent laboratories, mentored and supervised by faculty members. Modern scientific tools for use by undergraduates include spectrophotometers, centrifuges, video-microscopy, analytical balances, electrophoresis systems, CRISPR-cas9 and an inverted, fluorescent capable microscope.

About the Degree

Students who graduate from the program are exceedingly prepared for entrance into graduate school, medical school, dental school or whatever next steps they plan to take in order to reach their career goals. There are countless opportunities for biological sciences students to pursue during and after their time at Olivet including, pursing graduate studies, volunteering overseas and serving the local community.

Areas of Study Within the Department

With 4 key areas of study and numerous degree options within each area, the Department of Biological Sciences offers the skills and opportunities to shape your future.

Current Projects

Many Olivet students keep busy by pursuing faculty-mentored original research projects. Access ONU’s science reporter Brandon Grossi has the story.

Chair, Department of Biological Sciences

Dr. Dan Sharda

Dr. Sharda brings a wealth of knowledge in the areas of tumor immunology and ischemia/reperfusion injury to Olivet’s Department of Biological Sciences. His extensive background in biological research includes seven years in tumor immunology while earning his doctoral degree in pathobiology in the field of tumor immunology and three years in cardiovascular disease as part of his post-doctoral studies.

Biological Sciences Faculty

The world will flourish more because our students are working in it.

Outside the Classroom

Field experiences are a hallmark of the biological sciences programs. Recent student/faculty excursions include:

  • Arctic Circle, Alaska
  • Costa Rica
  • The Field Museum
  • Lincoln Park Zoo
  • Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area, Indiana
  • Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
  • Kankakee River State Park
  • Bahamas
  • Michigan and Washington State

Learning Through Research

Students find research opportunities through a variety of avenues including campus laboratories with professor-mentors who use cutting-edge equipment and techniques like inverted fluorescent microscopy and Crispr-cas 9; community biotech firms like CSL Behring and Futurceuticals; and national centers of excellence like Baylor and Northwestern Universities.

Pre-Professional Programs

Research Awards

At Olivet Nazarene University, students conduct high-quality research to discover new and exciting findings! Zoology students Kim Zralka and McKenna Conforti presented their University Honors Program research at the 2018 Illinois State Academy of Sciences annual meeting and received high awards for their contributions to science.
