Justin Brown

Chair of Mathematics & Computer Science and Professor

Mathematics and Computer Science, School of STEM

Dr. Brown joined Olivet’s faculty as a full-time professor in 2009. He currently serves as the Chair for the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and teaches calculus, linear algebra, abstract algebra and number theory. He also teaches in the university’s honors program.

During his time at Olivet, Dr. Brown has supervised several student research projects; some for students graduating with honors, and others for students participating in the Pence-Boyce summer research program. He has coauthored two textbooks for graduate level students in algebraic geometry, which is the specialty area of mathematics in which he earned his Ph.D. at Northeastern University in Boston.

For the 2010-2011 academic year, he was a Project NExT fellow, a professional development program sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. While an undergraduate student at Point Loma, he served on a three-week mission trip to Rwanda; and he threw the shotput and discus for the university’s Track and Field team.

A native of Southern California, he met his wife Jody, a New Englander, during his time in graduate school. Together, they have three sons, Owen, Evan, and Callen; and a daughter, Islyn. For relaxation, he likes watching football, gardening, playing guitar and listening to Bob Dylan.

If you’re a baseball fan, you might recognize his voice, too. He’s the public address announcer for Tiger baseball at ONU.
