Zachary Bowers

With the dynamic spirit of a true artist, Zachary Bowers is an engaging performer, humble teacher, and passionate advocate for the arts. He connects with a diverse audience through creative programming and interdisciplinary collaborations. On every kind of stage, Bowers performs with “beautiful attention to detail, indefatigable enthusiasm, and creative musical input, all wrapped up in exceptional virtuosity” (Mary Ellen Childs, composer).

Bowers’ musical journey began on piano at age 4. Then, after attending a performance of Michael Torke’s “Rapture Percussion Concerto” he became so enamored with the sound and athleticism that he shifted his focus to percussion. Born to be on stage, Bowers made his professional debut at a young age playing snare drum with the Florida Orchestra in a performance of John Corigliano’s “Pied Piper Fantasy.” He made his orchestral conducting debut before the age of 18, leading the Florida Orchestra in a rousing rendition of John Philip Sousa’s “The Thunderer March” in front of over 10,000 people. And before the age of 24 he had performed with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. 

As comfortable in the classroom as he is on stage, Bowers is committed to sharing his passion for music. His charisma shines through his vibrant and varied teaching style. Whether on stage or in the classroom, he exudes a “rare blend of energy, professionalism, and absolute mastery of his craft, treating every moment as an opportunity to inspire” (D. Southerland, Urbana Pops Orchestra). In addition to his performing engagements, Bowers holds two primary teaching appointments: Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Olivet Nazarene University and Director of Percussion for the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra.
