Both Tiger soccer teams to represent Olivet in national competitions

Tiger women’s soccer captured a 3-1 victory over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Oct. 25. Under the leadership of Head Coach Bill Bahr ’96/ ’05 M.B.A./’14 M.A., the team finished their season at 13-6-1 with 10-1 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play.

Tiger women’s soccer captured a 3-1 victory over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Oct. 25. Under the leadership of Head Coach Bill Bahr ’96/ ’05 M.B.A./’14 M.A., the team finished their season at 13-6-1 with 10-1 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play.

With this win, Tiger women’s soccer earned a conference automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round on Nov. 18. This will be the team’s first visit to the post season in three years, having last made it when this year’s seniors were freshmen.

Named to the CCAC All-Conference First Team are:

Sarah Buffum, sophomore — She led the Tigers with 11 goals on the season for 22 points. She was the CCAC’s 2016 Freshman of the Year.

Hannah Ondrey, senior — She was second on this year’s team with eight goals and 19 points. 

Tess Marcordes, senior — She anchored the defense which allowed just 11.9 shots per game, 6.1 on-goal.  She also scored one goal and had three assists. This is her fourth All-Conference honor.

The 31-team 2017 NAIA Opening Round takes place Nov. 18 at 15 sites around the country. Olivet will travel to Santa Clarita, California, to face The Masters University (14-5-1). 

Tiger men’s soccer defeated Calumet College St. Joseph (Ind.) on Nov. 4 just three minutes into the second overtime. Senior Christian Henock-Berhanu scored the winning goal. His golden goal ultimately helped ONU advance to the semifinal round for the fifth time in six seasons. The team finished this season at 11-8-1, second in the regular CCAC standings.

In his sixth season as head coach for the Tigers, David Blahnik ’07/’10 M.B.A. is 11-1-2 in CCAC Tournament play, having led ONU to four postseason titles. Olivet received the conference’s second automatic bid for being the regular season runner-up as the regular season champion, Cardinal Stritch University, captured both titles.

The 31-team 2017 NAIA National Championship will get underway on Nov. 18 with 15 Opening Round matches at campus locations across the country. Olivet Tigers play No. 3 Missouri Valley College (15-2-3) on their home field in Marshall, Missouri, that day.

Named to the CCAC All-Conference First Team are:

Tumi Moshobane, junior — He led the team with eight goals and 20 points, finished with 60 shots, 30 on goal and had two game-winning goals.

Brian Pfaff, junior — He was instrumental in leading the defense that finished with a 1.31 goals against average and five shutouts.

Richard Schneider, senior — He started in all 20 games this season, scored four goals, had two assists and 10 total points, 30 shots and 18 shots on goal.
