Olivet Nazarene University offers a range of nursing degrees that cater to students at every experience level. From an online RN-BSN program to a traditional four-year residential nursing degree; from a post-graduate family nurse practitioner certificate to a doctorate in ethical leadership, there are a variety of programs available.

Because of the excellent career preparation provided by the faculty in Olivet’s School of Nursing, combined with connections to valuable clinical experiences at local hospitals, many nurses who complete their undergraduate degrees at Olivet choose to continue their educational pursuits through graduate-level programs offered by the University.

In this article, Liz Lowe ’21/’24 M.S.N. shares about her personal choice to study nursing at Olivet as both an undergraduate and a graduate student in the master of science in nursing education (M.S.N.) program. This interview has been condensed for length and clarity.

Olivet: Why did you choose to enroll in the graduate program at Olivet?

Liz: I first chose Olivet as it is my alma mater. I received my undergraduate nursing degree from Olivet, and it was important to me to return to the same place if I could. I had a great undergrad experience, so I knew it would be a great experience for my master’s. Second, I chose Olivet’s program for convenience. Because the program is fully online, it made it possible to continue to work full time as I got my master’s degree. Lastly, I liked how quick the program was. Being able to finish my degree in less than two years was extremely important to me.

What were some factors that influenced your decision to pursue your master of science in nursing education degree?

I always knew I wanted to go back to teach. I have always enjoyed teaching and love interacting with students when I have them at work. Plus, the convenience, prior good experience with Olivet, and accessibility to the program were all factors that I took into account when applying.

What are a few highlights from your experiences?

I truly enjoyed the cohort I was in as a graduate student. We all became such good friends and really carried one another through the program. I enjoyed my practicum as it focused on learning how to teach students effectively in the classroom, clinical, and lab settings. I learned how to utilize different teaching strategies for each setting, which was super helpful. Throughout my practicum time I also learned how to connect with the students on a deeper level. Being a source of encouragement and support for them is one of the most meaningful experiences to me. I was able to return to Olivet to do it with Professor Karen Smith, who taught my pediatrics class in undergrad. She made the experience one to remember by going above and beyond true interest in helping me succeed, and tried her hardest to make sure I had the best experience possible.

Why do you think nurses are important within the healthcare system? What are some things they do that can’t be/aren’t done by other professionals?

Nurses are an integral part of the healthcare system. A large part of our job is patient education. As nurses, we spend the most amount of contact time with patients. It is so important we use this time wisely. Nurses are resourceful, compassionate and play an integral role in the patient’s healing process.

Have you had any “aha” moments in the workplace, where specific trainings from nursing school connected with your work?

Yes. I was working full time in a hospital as a nurse throughout the M.S.N. education program and there were many times when I was able to translate theory I was learning in the M.S.N. program to my practice as a nurse. It was so cool to see the connection and have an understanding at this higher level of learning.

What advice would you give to a prospective student about pursuing a nursing degree?

Really pray about it and make sure it is what you are being called to do. Nursing is definitely a calling that requires empathy, compassion and patience. The great thing about nursing is that there are so many opportunities open to you upon graduation. You can do so many things with a nursing degree so really do your research on a specific career or specialty you think you are interested in. Talk to someone you know is either in nursing school or is a nurse already to gain a better understanding of nursing school and the field of nursing. I did this and it was super beneficial for me!

Anything else you’d like to add?

I am truly grateful for all that Olivet has enabled me to accomplish. The people I have met throughout my educational journey have encouraged me, pushed me and supported me in all my endeavors.
