Human resource students from Olivet Nazarene University won the 2017 Division I Case Competition at the recent Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Student Case Competition and Career Summit – East in Philadelphia. This major SHRM award competition centers on developing effective solutions to business problems and is open to human resource (HR) students. Olivet teams have also done well in these competitions previously, placing second in 2015 and fifth in 2016.
Olivet students on the 2017 winning team are:
- Juleah Puccinelli, a senior majoring in business administration with concentrations in management and human resource management, of West Chicago, Illinois
- Holly Risinger, a senior majoring in business management, of Tremont, Illinois
- Mitchell Lockwood, a junior majoring in business administration with concentrations in management and human resource management, of Manteno, Illinois
- Annah Schick, a junior majoring in business administration with concentrations in management and human resource management, of Plainfield, Illinois
- Luke Cavender, a sophomore majoring in business administration with a concentration in human resource management, of Aurora, Illinois
In the April 2017 competition, 30 teams — comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from schools across the United States — competed. Runner-up in Division I was the University of Toledo. West Virginia University won the Division II title with East Carolina University taking second place. Other participating schools include Pennsylvania State University, Ball State University, Rutgers, Texas A&M, University of Tennessee, West Virginia University, Quinnipiac University, Temple University, Baldwin Wallace University and James Madison University.
During the competition, each team analyzed and solved a business case by preparing a written executive summary and 15-minute oral presentation. This required integrated HR thinking, ethical decision-making, and strong communication and presentation skills. A panel of certified SHRM members judged preliminary and final oral presentation rounds onsite.
