When the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers compete, they get serious. Three outstanding athletes were recently recognized for their achievements.
Andrea Vega of the women’s swimming and diving team picked up her third career CollegeSwimming.com NAIA Swimmer of the Week honor for her performance at the University of Illinois meet in January. There, she captured the title in the 200 freestyle and finished second in three other events. She and her team picked up wins over Eastern Illinois University, Butler University and Lincoln College. Andrea is a junior majoring in child development.
Carlie Vannatta of the women’s track and field team took first place in the weight throw at the Grand Valley State University (Michigan) Mike Lints Open in January to claim Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Field Athlete of the Week accolades. Her throw of 60 feet, 2.5 inches (18.38 meters) topped the field of 38 competitors and was an “A” standard mark, not to mention ranking second in the nation this year. She also placed sixth out of 34 challengers in the shot put with a throw of 41-9 (12.73 meters). Carlie is a senior majoring in special education teacher training.
Bryce Vollrath of the men’s track and field team claimed his second straight CCAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week award by earning a pair of top four finishes in his two events at the Grand Valley State University (Michigan) Mike Lints Open in January. He placed second out of 33 competitors in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 5 inches (15.98 meters), an “A” standard mark. He was also fourth among 36 challengers in the weight throw with his distance of 56-5 (17.21 meters). Bryce is a sophomore majoring in engineering.
