BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Olivet Nazarene University’s (ONU) women’s basketball team delivered an impressive comeback win at inside McHie Arena on Saturday, rallying from a halftime deficit to secure an 84-80 victory over Saint Xavier University.

ONU came out strong in the first quarter, jumping to an early 27-22 lead. Bett O’Neal and Hattie Hagedorn set the tone offensively, combining for 13 points in the opening frame. Despite some early defensive lapses, the Tigers shot 45.5% from the field and seemed to be in control of the game. However, the Cougars, as a team, proved to be a tough challenge with their fast-paced play and strong offensive execution.

The second quarter saw the Cougars take control, using their offensive efficiency to build a 47-41 lead by halftime. Saint Xavier shot a scorching 68.8% from the field during the period, exploiting ONU’s struggles, particularly from beyond the arc, where the Tigers made just 10% of their attempts. As ONU’s shooting cooled, the Cougars’ fast pace and smooth offensive execution helped extend their advantage. However, despite the setback, the Tigers remained within striking distance and were far from finished.

Coming out of halftime, the Tigers delivered a knockout punch in the third quarter. ONU went on a 12-0 run to open the second half, completely flipping the script. Olivia Dirkse was a key contributor during this surge, scoring 8 points in the period and providing a much-needed offensive spark. The Tigers’ defensive pressure intensified, forcing Saint Xavier into tough shots, while ONU’s offense found its rhythm. Despite the strong quarter, the Tigers still trailed 67-63 heading into the final frame.

The final quarter was a back-and-forth affair, but ONU’s poise and execution down the stretch made the difference. The Tigers hit timely shots, including a critical three-pointer from O’Neal and key free throws from Khendel Rolison. Saint Xavier, despite their best efforts, struggled to find offensive rhythm in the final moments, and ONU’s defense continued to clamp down. With a 21-point fourth quarter performance, ONU sealed the 84-80 win, securing the hard-fought comeback.

Looking Ahead

With the victory behind them, the Tigers now look ahead to their next game, a home conference matchup against St. Ambrose University on Jan. 22nd, at 5:30 p.m. CST. ONU will be eager to build on this momentum as they continue their push toward the top of the conference standings.
