Sonya Comer, D.M.E.

Associate Professor


Dr. Comer holds a degree in Music Education with an emphasis in instrumental music from Olivet Nazarene University where she graduated summa cum laude in 1995. She received the Walter B. Larsen Award for Musical Excellence during her time as a student at Olivet. In 2013, she earned a Master of Music degree in Music Education with an emphasis in choral music from Kent State University. In 2025, Dr. Comer earned her Doctor of Music Education degree from Liberty University as a Graduate with High Distinction.

As an educator, she taught a variety of different ages in many settings over the years including private and group piano, general music K-8, therapeutic music activities K-12, Kindermusik and a wide variety of camps, workshops and clinics. Dr. Comer has taught private and class piano at Olivet since 2009 and has gradually added piano lit and pedagogy and music education methods courses during that time. She serves as University Supervisor for music education student teachers and sponsors the local ILCMEA chapter. She is truly an educator at heart and loves to facilitate the learning process for students from the very beginning through deepening, polishing and mastering the comprehension and execution of a knowledge or skill.

As a church musician, she has led worship and trained/mentored future church musicians, both as a volunteer and paid staff member of her local church. She has chaired a worship planning team, coordinated all elements of worship services, directed rehearsals and organized many musical productions for multi-generational dramatic presentations with drama, choir and orchestra.

As a business professional, Dr. Comer owns FASTSIGNS of Kankakee with her husband, David. Together they have worked with their staff to significantly grow their business since they purchased it in 2014. They won Rookie of the Year Award in 2016 and Highest Percentage of Sales Growth Award in 2017, presented by FASTSIGNS International. They have received a number of customer solution and sign project awards and in 2019, Dr. Comer received the Women in Business award presented by the Daily Journal.

Dr. Comer is a member of the National Association for Music Educators, Music Teachers National Association, Illinois State Music Teachers Association, and Kankakee Valley Music Teachers Association. In addition to serving at her church, she enjoys working with community theatre organizations and accompanying student musicians for recitals and juries.

Dr. Comer is married to Dave Comer and they live in Bourbonnais with their Bernedoodle, Lucy. Their older daughter, Michaela, and son-in-law, Peter both graduated from ONU in 2020 and live in LaSalle, Illinois with their son, Ezra, and Bernese Mountain Dog, Pippin. Michaela practices law at Prairie State Legal and Peter is a Senior Accountant at Evolution Risk Partners. Their younger daughter, Madison and son-in-law, Drew, both graduated from ONU in 2022 and live in Bradley, Illinois. Madison is the Community Engagement Partner at FASTSIGNS of Kankakee and Drew teaches science at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School where he also coaches football and baseball.
